Guerilla Gardening
I recently saw an article on guerilla gardening. It is a movement happening globally from London to Adelaide. The movement revitalised un-used or un-cared for land with flowers, plants or vegetables.
Some of the re-planting occurs on blocks of land which has been un-used for years and has no public value due to its derelict state.
A blog dedicated to the movement is Guerilla Gardening which was started in 2004 by Richard Reynolds. It shows many examples around London of land which has been re-vitalised. It also includes examples from other parts of the world which people have contributes. The video below shows Richard re-planting an area of land near a round about.
Often the gardens are formed in the dark of night so no authorities can holt the process, in some parts people do re-vitalise the land during the day. Re-planting the land during the day allows passers by to interact with the gardeners and may offer some monetary funds.
Gardening on land not owned by the person is not new however the term guerilla gardening is and is considered to be a pro-active movement.
It has however been commercialised in an adidas commercial recently released (see below) so the movement may be becoming more main stream.
I think the principles of the movement mean something in today’s society, seeing people take pride and care in their communities. In times when food prices are on the increase and many areas in cities are left un-used and derelict it is a movement which may get nature back in cities.
